A capacitive proximity sensor detects objects without touching them and, unlike an inductive sensor, it can sense non-metallic materials. It is the preferred choice for accurate, non-contact detection of non-metallic solids and liquids in machinery and automation equipment, for example to confirm that a part or material is present before the next machine step.

RB Automation offers capacitive proximity sensors in 18 mm and 30 mm sizes with sensing distances of 8 mm and 15 mm, plus a rectangular 25 x 52 x 6 mm version with a 4 mm sensing distance. Switching frequency is 50 Hz for the 18 mm and 30 mm types and 35 Hz for the rectangular type, and all are rated IP67.

The sensors are available with 3-wire PNP or NPN outputs or as 2-wire AC/DC versions, and work on a 10-30 V DC or 230 V AC supply depending on the model. They include reverse polarity protection and LED indication, come in brass, stainless steel or plastic housings, and can be ordered with a cable or a connector.
