A photoelectric sensor detects objects without contact using a light beam, and it is the preferred choice for accurate, non-contact detection of non-metallic objects on machinery and automation equipment. Typical applications include presence and object detection, transparent object detection, goods detection on conveyors, counting objects and general factory automation.

A diffuse sensor detects light reflected from the object itself, a retro-reflective sensor works with a reflector placed opposite it, and a through-beam sensor uses a separate emitter and receiver.
