Stepper Servo Motor FAQs

Straight answers to what buyers ask us most about Stepper Servo Motor.

A stepper servo motor is a 2-phase stepper motor fitted with an encoder so a closed-loop drive can monitor and correct its position. The AM series motors on this page are based on a Cz optimised magnetic circuit design and compact M-shaped molds, with high magnetic density stator and rotor materials for high energy efficiency.

Three AM series versions are listed: the standard 2-phase closed-loop stepper motor, the stepper servo motor with brake, and the stepper servo motor with Z-signal encoder. All three share the Cz optimised magnetic circuit, compact M-shaped mold and high magnetic density materials, so you choose based on whether your axis needs a holding brake or a Z index signal.

Choose the stepper servo motor with brake when the axis must hold its position while the motor is not powered, for example vertical axes, lifting movements or loads that could drift under gravity. For horizontal axes where the load cannot move on its own, the standard AM series 2-phase closed-loop stepper motor is usually sufficient. RB Automation can check your axis before you order.

The Z signal is an index pulse from the encoder that marks a fixed reference point in each revolution. It is used for accurate homing and for synchronising the motor with other axes or with the controller. Pair the AM series stepper servo motor with Z-signal encoder with a drive that accepts Z-signal input, such as the T60Plus closed-loop stepper drive.

Stepper servo motor prices depend on the frame size, torque, version (standard, with brake or with Z-signal encoder), cable length and the quantity ordered. RB Automation shares a quotation after reviewing your requirement rather than listing a fixed rate. Yes, RB Automation can quote a stepper servo motor together with a matching closed-loop drive such as the T42, T60Plus, T86, T60S/T86S or DS86, so the encoder and drive are compatible from the start. Buying the set together simplifies commissioning and repeat orders for OEM machines. Share your axis load and control signal to get a combined quote.
